Photography Question

Christopher A. Vedros

Does anyone NOT use PhotoShop?

Are there any other digital photographers out there who don't use PhotoShop, or am I the only one? I'm not knocking PS, I know it's the standard by which all others are judged. I've just never felt comfortable with it. To each his own.

So what other image editing programs are people using out there? I'm curious.

I use Microsoft Digital Image Pro and I've been very happy with it. I'll admit, when Picture It first came out, it was pretty basic. But it was very easy to learn, and it could do the basics. Now it has evolved into Digital Image Pro and it's very capable. It can even use PS plugins.

Now before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I am NOT claiming Digital Image Pro is better than PS. It's just my personal preference. So what's yours?

I do not use Photoshop, I,too, use Microsoft Digital Image and ACDSee. I think both of these are excellent.

I use PS v7, but started out with Paint Shop Pro v9 -- which I still use extensively because it's a little more intuitive, and easier than PS. I also use Picassa now and then, especially for straightening images because it's got the *easiest* tool for that I've ever seen.

After scanning, I use software for re-sizing and for minor tweaks,...to try to get close to the quality and integrity of the original slides.
Image Expert is very basic but functional in that regard.

I use Ulead Photoimpact. I have played around with PS, but it does seem a lot less user friendly (although I guess it's just what you're used to).
I am planning to change to PS, more because it seems that all you hear is "PS this" and "PS that", rather than limitations in Photoimpact.
I know that's not a good reason, but sometimes it's nice to be part of the crowd :-)

I use Corel Photo-Paint (9) because this is what I was in taught in college. It is pretty user-friendly.

I had a really old version of Photoshop and I hated it. I found myself using Microsoft Picture It a lot. I loved the layers program in it. It was very easy for me to just pick up with out reading a manual. But, then I got to a point where I wanted to be able to do more and so I bought photoshop CS, I hated (OK truly hated it) at first. I bought the photoshop bible and started reading everything I could about the program then, I just started playing with photo's in it with the bible in my hand. Now there is no going back this program is amazing and limitless. But with amazing and limitless there is definately a level of investment in time that one needs to make in order to understand the basics.

Just like anything else, some will some won't. I learned Photoshop 5.5, mostly on my own @ the school of hard knocks, but am now up to CS(i.e. 8) and love it. but... it has taken a couple of years to get reallly comfortable with it. (but it seems like days as I have lots of fun with it) I recommend the Quick Start guide for Photoshop (has the rabbit icon on the front) as it has pictures of what you can do so you can say "hey , that looks cool" or " yea, that's what I want to do" and then it tells you how. As with any of the more complex software, you have to learn where some of the palettes and tools, etc. are and what they do / contain, but after that, it's good fun. If you just want simple picture adjustment, manipulation, some of the more streamlined versions (there are a million out there) will do. Picasa 2, a free download from google, is amazing for image management and quick printing. Hope this helps.

  Hi, All...

I use a few different programs. I cut my teeth on PaintShop back in 96, then learned Photoshop in 97, used it extensively because of my job, got out of the biz a few years later, picked up Paintshop 7 a couple years ago for a different job, now use it at home, and just recently downloaded Ulead's PhotoImpact, which is pretty cool, too.

I now use all three, based on what it is I want to do. PaintShop's great for a quick tweak, and I'm still learning PhotoImpact, which seems fairly user friendly, especially in the special effects arena.

It may be just me, but I don't find Photoshop very user friendly for beginners, unless you take a class or get some kind of training on it. If I didn't already have it, I am fairly certain I wouldn't go out and purchase it, especially since there are so many other great programs out there that work wonders on photos. :)

Just my $.02.

Right now I am using GIMP. I am still learning everything that it has to offer, but it basically does everything that Photoshop does, plus it is free of the internet.
