Photography Question

creating an efficient image library

I just made the leap from film to digital by purchasing a new Nikon D70. Besides learning to use my new toy, my biggest priority is to set up a fast and efficient digital workflow. I have read a few articles on this subject, but I'm still a bit confused. I plan to store my images on the computer with folders set up in chronological order by date or shooting location and use subject subfolders when appropriate. I will archive images onto CD with contact sheets for each one. Do you still store the images on the hard drive after copying the orignals and revised editions onto CD? It seems to me that the drive will fill up quickly even on a newer system. How does an image browser/asset management software program such as CompuPicPro or ACDSee fit into this system. As a neophyte would I be better served with one of these programs or by sticking to a basic "My Photos" directory with my Windows program. CompuPicPro seems to offer many attractive features and the download is free. I greatly appreciate any insights into these questions.

Congratulations on your D70 - I love that camera! If your hard drive is filled up you have to make a copy on either a cd/dvd or another hard drive. If it is not full, why not have a copy on the hard drive too? I would also recommend to make 2 copies. One you can store at home, and one at another place. In case of fire you will still have a copy.

If you use software to manage your images, most of them make thumbnails of all your photos, so you will still be able to view them all, even the one that is stored on a cd.

I would highly recommend an asset management software to organize your photos. It will be so easy to find your photos, especially if you have written keywords on all the photos. The amount of photos is probably not so big yet, but in a few years you will have thousands of photos and you will be so happy that you have them organized.

I started to use Fotostation (www.fotostation.com), but I am not happy with the search tool in the software, so I am looking for a new software to use. I am looking into Portfolio, (www.extensis.com), but I haven't decided yet.

I would love to discuss this more, so if you are interested I can tell you which tools I think are important in the software and how I have made and use a keyword system. Just let me know.
