Blown out whites on weddings w SB800 & Nikon D70

When I am shooting weddings and I have my Nikon D70 set on auto and using my SB800 flash (using command mode) it overexposes the whites a.k.a. the wedding gown in the shot. I set my metering on closest subject or dynamic, and in either it does this. These settings work fine on all other "people" shots during the event except for the closer bride shots (within 5 -10 feet). Is there a mode I can use on the flash and/or camera that will work for most shots and not cause this effect with the bride?

Are you using the camera or the flash on auto? If using the camera on Auto settings this is a typical result. My only advice is not to use it, but to meter appropiately. You could decrease your EV by a stop or so to see it that darkens it up.

If you're using your flash in auto, an easy fix is to put the flash in TTL mode and let it do it's own thing. Look at your preview screen; if it's too light or dark, then increase or decrease the output on the back of the SB-800.

If you were using film I would suggest you switch to a lower contrast film. Since you are digital, I can't help you. This is one of the many reasons I use film to shoot weddings.
