Why am I getting poor quality uploads to site?

Why am I having trouble getting my uploads to look right on the site? I have them sized right, I know what they should look like and yet when putting them on the site they are darker and have like a vasaline look in them. I have tried both jpeg and tiff with no compression yet both with dissapointing results...

I checked out the site but I'm afraid my problem isn't in the color. I am losing sharpness. At various lines and highlights I'm seeing a vasaline like look. Whats wierd is I went to my alternative server Netzero and went to my Gallary and there is no problem, but when I go back to Compuserve, I can't get them as clear. I even eliminated the compression on CS and raised the graphis from 20 to 40 but no alas no luck.

I am having the same problem, loosing sharpness on upload. It actually looks like when you upload a photo, even to the recommended specs, it gets compressed anyway. These photos are tack sharp in PS, and on my pbase site, so what's the trick here? I see some other people's photos are nice and sharp, so they must be doing something right. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mike

I am glad to say I have been able to solve the problem... It seems that Compuserve is part of AOL and they compress uploads... I had to go into my prefrences and click never compress and also go into my fonts and raise the graphics from 20, to 40... Worked for me, help this helps others...

Stephen: Friend who use AOL have also mentioned that problem. I did not realize it was a problem with Compuserve too.

Nice to hear how the problem can be solved.

A little late - but some people swear by uploading to BP at 480 (instead of 500) dpi on one of the sides of your pics... Worth a try if anyone else is having problems....

To be precise: AOL/CompuServe actually compresses downloads, not uploads. The file you upload to BP (or any other site) is not modified by AOL as it is uploaded. However, when you visit your BP gallery page (or any other page on any website), AOL & CompuServe will--by default--compress all images on those pages. As you've noticed, this can be disabled, but is turned on by default each time the AOL or CompuServe software is installed. CompuServe, as you mentioned, was purchased by AOL a number of years ago, and the CompuServe software has grown progressively more identical to AOL's browser with each release, and the two are nearly interchangeable now.
