HYPER FOCAL DISTANCE

I have a question about the HYPER FOCAL DISTANCE SCALE...
How on earth do you actually set this? I know you generally use this with a wideangle lens or a standard lens set to it's widest setting with a small apture opening like f.22, but how do you set the focal ring? Do you line the foot mark with the line or the infinity mark with the line.
I've also been told to put the infinity mark at the apture mark your using. I don't know? Anyho, The lens I'm using is a quantaray 28-90mm and I also have a 60-300mm lens. Is it possable to set it with the longer zoom lens.

You can set use hyperfocal distance on any lens that has a distance scale. Many zooms do not. Just set your aperature at whatever aperature you want to use, the smaller the better, and set the infinity mark at that aperature on your distance scale. You will want to use a normal or wide angle lens simply because they offer greater depth of field. Hyperfocal distance can be set with long lenses but you won't have as great a DOF.
