Kerry L. Walker   Do you mean the built-in meter in your camera? If so, it is a reflected light meter. It reads the light reflecting off the surface of whatever the camera is pointing at, usually averaging the light entering the lens, and tells the camera what shutter speed and/or aperature is needed. Of course a reflected light meter can be fooled by things such as backlighting or extremely white objects (it assumes everything is 18% gray) but, for the most part, it works just fine.
