need lighting tips for shooting male calendar I've been asked to shoot some firefighters for a benefit calendar to raise money for MDA. This will be done onsite at the riverfront and possibly at the firestation. Does anyone have any lighting suggestions to get the best definition out of these gentlemen? I'll be shooting digital, and can schedule time of day. Would strong overhead sun be best for strong contrast or should I use artificial light? Any input will be appreciated! Thanks

In my humble opinion, strong overhead sun is one of the worst conditions under which to shoot. Shoot when the light is softer, like in the morning or late afternoon. You won't have the harsh shadows.

Slick, that is precisely the reason I DON'T want my picture taken in direct sun. (fat definition, wrinkle definition, etc.)

Denise Using strobe lights and umbrellas or light boxes is best. If you have no experience then go buy 4'x8' sheets of white foamcore board and use them as reflectors. Like the other gentlemen said, avoid midday sun, rather get out there in early morning light or late afternoon closer to sunset. Have someone hold these foam core boards as reflectors at about 45 degrees on either side to bounce light into the shadow side of your subjects. That will at least lower the contrast.

If these guy are on a calender Im sure they'll be pretty cut, and for male models, the more wrinkles they get the more money they make
