How to measure for cropping proofs I took some portraits for friends on the beach using my 35mm camera. They would like to enlarge one or some of the photos to 8X10 or possibly 11X14, but haven't seen the photos yet. I developed the rolls as 4X6's, but I would like to show them the "proofs" as they would look when enlarged. What are the exact measurements that I should crop the 4X6's to, is it 4X51/2? If so, would that be different if they decide to enlarge it to an 11X14 or only 5X7? Should I not crop them at all? Also, if I do crop them could I just chop off the 1/2" or appropriate value from one end of the photo or does it have to be equal parts from both ends? Thanks, Melissa

Melissa, Since all the sizes you mention have different side proportions, you'd be beating yourself up trying to crop exactly just to show the client. Simply inform the client that because of the different proportions, some of the image will be cropped out of whatever particular size you want. For your own information - Remember this - 35mm/digital cameras have a side proportion of 2:3. An 8x10 has side proportions of 2:2.5. This means you are going to lose some image on the SHORT side of the 35mm negative when you crop to 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, etc. So...for 8x10's it's pretty simple - you'd want to show them a 4x5. All you have to do is crop/cut off 1 inch from your 4x6. You can crop 1" from the top or bottom, or you can crop 1/2" from both the top and bottom, or any other increment matching 1" that you want. The PROBLEM you run into, is not knowing how your chosen lab will crop the negative! Will they crop all from the top, the bottom, or equally from both ends, or what?? The 11x14 is very close, but very slightly longer in crop than the 8x10, but not enough to really be concerned about. Hope this helps. Michael H. Cothran www.mhcphoto.net
