Film/Negative Scanners

I would like to buy a Film/Negative Scanner that is the best one for the value. I have some nice photos that I took with my film camera and someone told me the best way to go is to buy a negative scanners. I have been looking but really can't find that many that I like. Is there a certain brand that is the best and can someone tell where is the best place to buy them. Thanks, Nathan

Look at the Minolta in the 300-500 price range. The Nikon Coolscan V is also highly regarded. The Canon 4000US is still available for about $350, a great buy, IF you can live with a fairly slow scan time via USB1 or want to set up SCSI interface on your computer. Get an issue of Shutterbug or popular Photography and look at the ad section.

Scan at 4000 ppi (or with the Minolta, 5400 ppi) in high bit mode, if you want the most digital information in the scan and want to archive your best stuff to CD. Otherwise, for non-serious work, 2000 ppi at 8-bit is fine, if you want only 4 x 6's or to email photos.
