Flash pictures with Canon S20 digital camera

When I take close-ups within say two feet using the flash, I get a burst of light appearing in the centre of the picture. It's annoying and blocks out everything beneath. Canon technician suggested setting the compensation to a negative value. This only worked marginally and besides effected the rest of the picture.
Any suggestions? What should I do to correct this?

A flash simply cannot be used within 2 feet of the subject. See previous posts to calculate the minimum distance for any given flash.

My recommendation is to use an off camera light to light up your subject, then make sure that you meter correctly off the lit subject.

Happy new year!

Attached is a couple of pictures that demonstrate what you can do with an off-the-camera flash. Hope this inspires you.

Sorry, images didn't upload for some reason. Go to whatarocket.8m.com/photo.html and look for the Chess and Daisy pictures, both taken with an Olympus OM-1 and SunPak 144 Thyristor flash, and I think it was f/2.8 or 4.
