Where do I start? The D70, to me, is a far superior camera. I used the Rebel first and I bought the D70 outright after just holding it once. I used the canon a lot (a school loaner,) I never liked it because it felt cheaper than any other camera I've ever used. It is very very light weight and small. I personally don't like the controls, I found the D70 much more please to my fingers. Buttons and menus were more easily accessable. The D70 has a 1/500th flash sync speed which is a major upgrade over most cameras period. It has a better sharpening effects in the camera itself, and better noise control for long exposures. The D70 is a better feeling camera, and you can tell right away that it is strong. The D70 comes with a FAR superior lens. I can't emphasize this enough, not only does it have a better focal range, but it's better quality glass. I'm sorry, I'm obviously biased towards the D70, but I can say honestly that before I bought a DSLR, these two were my two top picks, and until I held the Rebel it was at the top of my list.

Which Rebel? The film Rebels have had their share of sudden death problems. Older Rebel DSLRs have some complaints about poor autofocus, but that may be a user fault. Canon has introduced so many Rebel models and subvariants so frequently, it's hard to generalize. The DSLRs may even be better than the film cameras were, an odd reversal of the norm.

As to the Nikon D70, ask Chauncey to explain to you the BGLOD (blinking green light of death)

I went to the camera store fully intending to buy the RebelXT and walked out with the D70. The Rebel is much smaller in size (not a big deal to me, I have very small hands) but doesn't feel like a well built camera. The D70 came with a better lens and was easier on the pocketbook!
