Photography Question

Andrew Laverghetta

When is RAW necessary as oppised to fine JPEG?

Hi!
I know that RAW format captures the best pictures with the greatest detail, but when is it really necessary? Wouldn't I definitly want to use RAW if I was shooting with long shutterspeeds and/or high ISO settings? I'm thinking about getting a Canon 20D this summer and for my puposes, at least at the moment, I would be using it to make pictures for around an 8x10 print. Maybe a little bigger on rare occasions. Would there be that much of a benefit for the attidional detail and file size? If anything, the big question is when is the ideal situation in which to use RAW format on the 20D? Thanks!!

I Shoot Nothing But Raw Its Not a Matter Of The Greatest Detail Or The Particular Camera Settings Your Using,The Larger File Size Comes In Handy When Printing Out Large Images The Control Over Various Adjustments Is The Main Benefits If You Miss The Exposure Or Need More Shadows Or Whatever It Gives You That Second Chance So To Speak.Jpegs Detoriate Bad Its Just Not a Good Format To Use!

So, when you open a raw file and edit it, it's still raw when you're working with it? I thought it changed to JPEG. I haven't actually had the opertunity to get the camera or work with that kind of digital yet so I'm trying to be prepared for when I do. Does the special program kind of 'decode' the raw and then you can still use photoshop and such? Or can photoshop 'decode' it itself. I have PS 7.0. Thanks!

I don't even have PS yet, but the software that came with my Canon M2 works on the raw just fine, also on the Red Blue Green. The picture I took of the rocks was way past sunset so it was overexposed by 3 stops. Then I just turned down the exposure with my software to perfect it

Hi Andrew The Raw File Converter Works Within Ps7 It Isnt A Stand Alone Program If You Dont Already Have It Adobe No Longer Has It Avaliable For Download (For ps7)You Would Have To Upgrade To Ps/cs And Download Their New Raw Converter (Its A Free Download)And Adds Alot Of The New Cameras To The List, The New Converter Wont Work In Ps 7 I Tried It Already(
The Raw Format Stays The Same Until You Do A Save As Command On The File It Then Will Change It To A Host Of Different Formats,You Can Work In Raw Format In ps7 Its The Same As Any Other Format When You Edit,Using Save As Commands Doesent Alter Your Raw Either Your Digital Negative Stays The Same As You Made The Image (Raw File)
You Can View Thumbnails Of Raw Files Without Using The Raw Converter But When You Open One It Always Opens Within The Raw Converter And Then Is Processed Into Ps.
What Type Camera Are You Planning On Using?
I Would Hate To See You Get Some Nice Images And Have Them Shot In Jpeg And Be No Good In A Few Years I Have Some Now That Were Great Years Ago And Are Totally Unusable Now (Because Of The Jpeg Format).Convert To Tiff It Lasts:-)
Hope That Helps A Bit!

Hey, I'll probably be using a 20D hopefully. Either that or if than new rebel is out during the summer but I would much rather get the 20D. Yeah, I am shooting slides now and scanning them, then saving them to a cd on tiff. thanks!
