Firewire vs. USB 2.0 - Which is better?

Many of the newer digital SLR's seem to have USB 2.0 download connections. The choices with Firewire connections seem a little limited. I wish to download images directly from a dSLR camera to a computer "on the fly" with each image being transfered as each photo is taken in a modified studio setup. I know this can be done with a firewire connection, but what about all of these new dSLR cameras that offer a USB 2.0 connection and not a firewire? Does USB 2.0 work the same way as the Firewire, or is USB 2.0 just a faster way to download images from the camera card after all photos are taken?

Steve, they aren't the same. However for this sort of use, there's really little difference. USB 1.1 is ocnsiderably slower, though. Get the camera you need, then put the appropriate interface into your computer. Kev

  Steve,
My husband is going to do the same "on the fly" transfer as you, except in different settings. Our current camera has USB 1.1 and when connected to the computer, it takes about 37 seconds for the image to transfer from camera to computer after the shutter is released. 37 seconds is too slow, so we are going to purchase a camera with a USB 2.0 and this will shave off 17 seconds on the download time!!!! So, yes, firewire is better, but you can still do your on the fly transfer with USB 2.0 (just make sure the computer you are downloading to has a USB 2.0 connection too!!)

The make a cable that goes from usb1,or 2 to firewire can get it almost anywhere that sell cables for computers. Firewire is alot faster than usb

Hi! Firewire Is A Touch Faster Than Usb 2.0 (On Large Files ie tiff's,Raw ect But Very Neglible)Usb 2.0 Is More Predominant,The Cables That George Talks About Could Work,But You Have To Make Sure Your Firewire Is Self Powered (Laptops Usually Arent)Desktops Are:-)
