Photography Question

Light-weight tripod

I am looking for a very light weight, but sturdy, tripod. I have a Bogen with a pan head that is great, but it's too heavy and awkward for jumping in and out of boats in wilderness areas. Does anyone have a suggestion for a light-weight tripod and appropriate head?

I firmly believe that the most important accessory a photographer can have is the tripod. First, I would recommend that you spare NO expense on a good quality tripod. If you buy quality, you may not have to replace it ever again.
For a lightest weight, most sturdy tripod, look into the Carbon Fiber tripods. The best and originals are made by Gitzo, although other manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon (including Manfrotto/Bogen). Carbon Fibers are super light weight, but extremely sturdy, and (Sorry) somewhat expensive. If you are jumping in and out of boats in the wilderness, this is your only real tripod choice.
