Looking for first SLR

I'd like to purchase a camera for my photography class, and it must be a film, manual SLR camera. I want it to be something I can use even after the course, but I'm frankly clueless about what to look for. I know I have my eye on Nikon, and the lower the price the better, but that's it.

I'm looking to shoot black and white. I don't know if lenses come with the cameras, or if they're separate, or optional depending on what you want... I'd like a built-in light meter unless that's a given... and other than that, you can see I need the advice!

Thanks,
Vicky

Canon SLR cameras and lenses are a great buy, because they are so plentiful., Lenses are cheap, because there is no competition for them, as they don't fit other cameras. That said, the quality and optical excellence are among the best. I don't think the AE-1 Program or AE-1 are good choices for the beginner. You need more control over aperture and shutter, without the crutch of the camera being able to set these automatically. Look for an AT-1, because they're fully manual, and a little newer. Look also at the TLb and TX, and the FTb. They can be bought cheap on auctions, but you may have to spend $80 or so to have then cleaned, lubricated and adjusted (called a CLA). Some sellers, such as KEH.com, sell used cameras with the foam door seal and mirror bumper already replaced.

Canon no longer makes a new manual camera, but Nikon still does. If you want to go new, look at the Nikon FM-10 and a 50mm lens.

I suggest you try Adorama.com. They have a good supply of used Nikon cameras and lenses. They may be a little more expensive than a seller on e-bay but I know them to be trustworthy. If you want new, as Doug said, try the FM-10. It is made by Cosina for Nikon and it is a good camera. If you buy used, you will probably have to buy a lens separately but that won't be a problem.

I have a Canon 3000n (Rebel) which is great for a beginner, and you can buy a package deal with a telephoto lense too! Got mine for AUS$638

But you can't go past Ebay for all this type of stuff!
