Photography Question

Eva M. Loretta

what is a wide angle lens?

I'm curious if I would benefit from purchasing a wide angle lens for my SLR camera? What are the pros of a wide angle and what type of photography is it usually used for?

Thanks

A wide angle lens shows a wider field of view than a normal lens. It enables you to shoot a wider area without getting further away from your subject. It also provides a greater depth of field at a given aperature than a normal lens. A wide angle lens can be used for a multitude of subjects, from scenery to group portraits.

Let me add one thing to Kerry's response -
In 35mm photography, a 50mm lens is considered "normal." That is, it 'sees' the way a human eye sees.

Any lens wider than 50mm (that is, the number is smaller than '50') would be considered a "wide angle" lens.
Example - a 35mm lens is considered a 'moderate' wide angle. A 28mm lens is considered the 'standard' wide angle. A 24mm is beginning to be 'very' wide, and 21mm and shorter are 'extreme' wide angle lenses.

Let me go one step further here:
In 35mm photography, a "Normal lens" is considered to be 50mm, but could be anything from 40-60mm. Anything SHORTER than about 40mm would be a "wide angle" lens, and anything LONGER than about 60mm would be considered a "telephoto" lens.

I hate to piggy back on this question but my head hurts because I guess I'm not sure what I need...I'm going to Yosemite National Park in two weeks and started to think that the landscape shots will need a wide angle if I want to get the "whole" beauty of it in....my Canon Rebel digital came with a 18mm-55mm lens...my question is...is that good enough to get the glory of this park? Or am I misunderstanding this all and it's not a "true wide angle", right? Honestly, I know this is a stupid question....but I'm confused. Can you help me please?

  Bobbie,
Your zoom should be plenty wide enough. You won't need to buy another lens.

You are welcome. For your information, the short end of your zoom is a wide angle - equal to about 28mm in 35mm - plenty wide enough for most shooting. Not being a digital shooter, I don't know if that is enough storage. I calculate everything in rolls of film. Guess one of these days I will have to learn to speak digital.
