Olympus Flash w/ Canon Rebel TI

I have an older Olympus Electronic Flash T 20, I would like to use it with my Rebel TI. It mounts correctly and even works, but a Canon rep told me that an "off brand" flash can discharge electric signals that could damage the camera. Is this true? I am thinking this is a Canon rep trying to only sell me Canon equipment. Let me know, thank you,
Sean and Amanda.

Every camera manufacturer will tell you that any flash not made by that manufacturer can damage your camera. They want you to buy their equipment. I have an Olympus T-32 flash that I use on both my Olympus OM-2n and my Pentax 645n. No problem. Of course, you won't have TTL connection, only manual or normal auto.

Any flash will mount and fire, providing you have a hot shoe on your camera. The problem is that none of the TTL electronics will match. You can only use your T20 in Auto or manual mode.
