To change a 35mm slide to a digital image, you have to scan it. If I set my scanner at 4000 pixels per inch, that's how many I have for each inch of the original's dimension. Multiplying pixel lengh by pixel width gives you a megapixel figure, how many millions of pixels.
Actually, you can get a nice printable 8 x 12 from a slide by scanning it at 2700 pixels per inch.
