focusing automatic SLR's I'm having trouble focusing the Elan 7E. Perhaps, you can advise. I just purchased the Elan 7E in December after 45 years of strictly manual SLR and TLR cameras, and seem to have a horrible time focusing, even in automatic point and shoot modes. I just get the lens focused, try to press the shutter, and it goes out of focus. When I try to lock the focus in order to meter, I lose my focus again. What am I doing wrong? I don't think the problem is with the camera, but with my brain or touch on the shutter, ~Bunny --

It sounds like you are doing a 1/2 press to get the camera to autofocus, lifting your finger, then pressing the shutter button again to take the photo. Don't do that. ;-) Once you get focus, do not lift off the shutter button, just press to take the shot. Alternatively, you may benefit from separating the autofocus and shutter release functions. If you set C.Fn 4 to "1", then pressing the * thumb-button on the back-upper-right will activate autofocus. Half press of the shutter button will activate the meter only and full-press to trip the shutter.

Thanks, Jon. There's so much to learn --or re-learn. I'll try it. I did the same thing in creative mode with the DEP. Set the first focusing point without a hitch. However, I'm not certain what happened to the second one, but I think I did what you informed me not to do...and we now know why I shouldn't do it that way, thanks to you. I'll also try the alternative method, which you recommend, I really appreciate all your assistance and patience. Thanks, again.

Of course there's an exception, and DEP is it. Check the instructions, but I think you do have to lift your finger off the shutter button between setting DEP1 and DEP2.

Jon, I'd like to search you down and give you a big hug for diagnosing my focusing problem. I thought I had destroyed my focusing/shutter button. I didn't. I just lifted when I could have kept it pressed. Now all is working again, and I feel much better having been gently corrected. Thank you so much!!!!! I'm going to refrain from using DEP for awhile. I have too many other things that I need to learn first. Now I understand why several people suggested I stay with a technology with which I "grew up". It's difficult going from a manual Nikon, which is a very easy machine to use, to the Canon Elan which calls for a lot of brain power, especially in my chemically damaged brain. Well, nothing like exercising the brain. Thanks, again. Bunny
