I think you are trying to cover too many field with one lens...

I don't know what is your budget but I heard the best all around lenses for a wedding is the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

For sports events you will like something with a little bit more zoom like the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

But then again it will depend also on how much quality you want on your pictures...

Thank for your answer Andres... but another question. When you say a EF 24-70mm you have in mind the conversion of the digital camera. if not.., What I need, a 18mm or somethin like this?

The conversion or cropping of digital cameras will definitely limit you for wide-angle pictures with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. A Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM or an Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM will give you a better wide angle option for groups, but since you ask for only “one lens” I think the range of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM will give you the option of close ups for portraits and some group pictures. The ideal option will to have at least two different lenses (in 2 different cameras) for each situation. I think all depends on your budget and remember these lenses are pretty expensive cause they are L lenses with big apertures that makes them good for low light.

You can also try a different approach and get a prime lens specialized for portraits like the EF 80mm f/1.8 or the EF 100mm f/2.0 that both have a great price (under $400) and get a second lens for the wide angle and group pictures like the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM ($750 and use it with a tripod in low light situations) And the total price will match one of those really expensive lenses.
