When to charge sales tax?

Hello,

I have received a wonderful opportunity to take some 1st Communion pictures for my sister's church. My question is, I live in Nebraska and will be taking the pictures in Colorado. How do I know when I should be charging sales tax and if I need to, which state's sales tax do you charge?

Thanks in advance your help!

Are you reporting the income to the IRS?? If no, don't worry. If yes, I would imagine in the state where the pics were taken...

Do you mean to imply that some people have income they don't report to the IRS? Even if you do report the income to the IRS, it really won't be worth the trouble to you or to the tax people in Colordo for you to register and pay for one single shoot - unless you are making a lot of money.

The IRS doesn't come into play here except that you need to report this as income on your own tax return.

Sales tax is always paid to the State where the sales were made. In your case, Colorado.
Contact the Colorado Department of Revenue. They will advise you as to procedure, and provide you with any forms that are needed. Normally, you don't need a sales tax number if you are doing temporary business. It's just a matter of reporting the amount of gross sales you had, and paying whatever the state and local sales tax amount is.
If you have a sales tax number in Nebraska, you would report this income on your quarterly or annual form, but would not pay any taxes on it. If you don't have a Nebraska sales tax number, then you don't have to worry about anything in Nebraska.
By the way, don't put this off - sales tax is due at the time of collection, and your time limit to pay the Dept of Revenue without penalty is usually only a couple of weeks.
