Color Calibration Problems

I am using the Monaco EZColor and the Monaco Optix Calibration system and am not happy with the results. I was thinking maybe there's something I'm missing to get it right. Maybe the automatic adobe gamma setting is still kicking in? I'm not sure what the problem is. Mine is not even close to printing what I see on the monitor. I'm running windows xp and I have an NEC LCD monitor and a low end Epson photo printer (820). I was looking on the internet to see if anyone had any problems with either one, and they seem to get raves. I have recently purchased an Epson 2200 but haven't received it yet. I notice it has downloadable profiles. Maybe that will help. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

If you are using PS to print, you need to make sure you are not correcting the color twice, and you may need to ignore the colors shown in Print Preview. Here's what that means:
1. In Photoshop CS, click on Page Setup, then on Printer...then on Properties...then on Advanced. On the Main tab, click on ICM in the Color Management section on the right, then in the ICC Profile section be sure to click on No Color Adjustment. This prevents having both PS and the printer driver do color adjustments. Be sure to select the correct paper type and be sure to have a downloadable paper profile available.
2. Click on OK three times to get back to the image.
3. Click on File...Print with Preview. Under Source Space choose Document, then just below that, under Print Space, choose the profile for the paper you are using. For Intent, use Relative Colorimetric.
4. When all other settings are set, click on Print. When the preview appears, ignore the colors in the preview no matter how incorrect they appear. Just go ahead and print the image. I believe there is a bug in PS which causes the colors in the preview to be off.
It took me about a month to get the colors right on an Epson 2200 even after I calibrated my monitor. Most of that time was wasted because the colors in the preview were so far off I didn't go farther and print the image. After I learned how to avoid double color adjustment and ignore the preview, my colors are coming out exactly as I expect.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I will give it a try. I am actually using the 2200 now with no color profiles at all and it is working pretty well, but I know once I get the profiles to work, it'll be even better.
Thanks!
