Photography Question

Frank P. Luongo

Backlit or Silhouette?

I have uploaded a photo with intentions of creating a backlit effect, NOT a silhouette. To me it appears more like a silhouette. I was trying to achieve that golden "halo" effect.

Welcome ccomments or suggestions.

Thanks

Frank,
To create a "halo effect", the primary source of light needs to be less direct.
Even when hiding the sun behind a tree branch or limb, it is still too bright and will dominate the scene,... causing silhouettes.
The light SHOULD be in front of you, but off to the side...or higher/lower to your shooting angle so that you can meter the subject normally (or maybe a little under-exposed), and allow the back-light to create a pleasing halo.
(See enclosed example.)
