To create a "halo effect", the primary source of light needs to be less direct. Even when hiding the sun behind a tree branch or limb, it is still too bright and will dominate the scene,... causing silhouettes. The light SHOULD be in front of you, but off to the side...or higher/lower to your shooting angle so that you can meter the subject normally (or maybe a little under-exposed), and allow the back-light to create a pleasing halo. (See enclosed example.)
