Lens for a Pentax K-1000

I have a K-1000 (never used) equipped with an f2.8 50 mm lens. I plan to give the camera to my daughter (amateur photographer) and want to add a zoom lens. What type of mount does the Pentax use? Can you suggest a lens in about the $100-$150 range that I can obtain quickly?

The Pentax K-1000 uses the Pentax "K-mount" lenses. Any lens that is a Pentax "K-mount" lens should fit on it.

In the $100-$150 price range, you will be looking for a used lens. Because Pentax made the K-1000 and its variants for so many years (discontinued in 1997), lenses for it are plentiful on the used market. If memory serves correctly, there were a number of Takumar (Pentax) SMC zoom lenses made with a focal length range of 28-80mm and 28-105mm.

Since you are looking for one quickly, and will want a reliable source, I recommend KEH Camera Brokers in Atlanta, GA. They have been in business for some time, enjoy probably the best reputation nationally, and the condition grading is noted for being conservative compared to the rest of the used camera gear dealers. Since you are giving this to your daughter, I recommend looking at the zooms with a condition of EX, EX+ and LN-. They have a web site complete with on-line ordering, and typically ship the day following an order by UPS. The web site is:

Oops, forgot to mention. Late in the K-mount line of lenses, Pentax made some auto-focus ones for their early AF camera bodies. Obviously, the AF feature in an AF lens would be useless on a K-1000. It would have to be manually focused. For this reason, I recommend looking at the manual focus zooms.

You will see "SMC" used with many of the lenses. This means "Super Multi-Coated." These are multi-coated lenses and should be a cut above the ones with a single optical coating on the lens elements.
