Josh Actually the picture is properly exposed. It is very contrasty and selective lighting. The exposure was set for the highlight side of the body. If you took a meter reading from the position of the camera, it would see all that black and give a severly overexposed picture. In this case to meter, you could go up the the subjects and use and incident meter to read the light hitting him or you could use your camera as a reflective meter by zooming in and getting your reading off his shirt and face and whatever else has light hitting it. One other technique is to use a spot meter and take the same reflective reading off the highlight side of him.
