Photography Question

Robert Murray

Pictures appear under exposed

I'm using a Nikon D70, but I've also used a Nikon Coolpix 8800, a Nikon Coolpix 3100, and (2)Canon Digital Rebels, all of which have had the same "problem". I've also noticed this same problem on a friends Kodak 7440. Every picture I take looks perfect when viewed on the cameras LCD. However, when the images are downloaded to a computer and viewed there, most (nearly all) of them are dark, i.e. they appear underexposed and have to be software enhanced. The same is true if the images are printed directly from the memory card, they're dark. Is this normal? If not, does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong? The exposure compensation is set at zero.

  Welcome to my world, Robert!
I also own the digital rebel and find that it underexposes images! I find a lot of people have the same problem with the dig rebel....Looks good on the LCD, but when uploaded to the computer it is darker....So, I use software to get my exposure correctly or shoot in RAW and do exp comp there.

Some say that it is the LCD overexposing the images! So....turn your LCD brightness down so you can get a better feel of what your image will look like.

Never used the Nikon or Kodak so can't be of help there. Just know you are not the only one out there!

The problem may be with your monitor, not your images. I can take a perfectly exposed print, scan it into my computer, and get a terribly underexposed picture on the screen. I know for me the problem is that my monitor is not properly calibrated. Your files should print out fine if sent to a lab.

They print out the same way they look on the computer, whether I print them at home, or send them to a lab -- dark, unless I do software enhancement. I'm thinking of trying to use the cameras exposure compensation to intentionally overexpose, and see how they look.

Can you upload one that has not been enhanced?

Kerry, my monitors are calibrated and my photos from my digital rebel still look underexposed!

Robert, doing overexposure or turning the brightness down on the camera LCD is probably your best choices!

Sorry to be of little help!

Seems like a problem with that particular camera then. Sure glad I use film.

No, it's not just the digital rebel. I've used two rebels, a kodak, and four different Nikons, (2) Coolpix 8800's, a Coolpix 3100, and now a D70. They're all the same. I think it's all digital.

  Robert,
You ought to find some photos on BP that were shot with those particular digicams. Then email those photogs (if they have contact info) to see if they have the same problem or a solution. That's what I did with the digital rebel. Most people on this site are willing to help if they can!

  Mellanie,

What was your solution with the Rebel?

Well, I usually fix it in Photoshop.
I've turned the LCD brightness down and sometimes I shoot in RAW format. If you don't mind doing post-processing, shooting in RAW would be good. But it also takes 7 mb of memory for each image....That means you either shoot less or get a bigger card!
Most of the time, I use Photoshop.

Another thing.....have you tried metering at different points? Meter off that '18% gray' area and then recompose. Also use your histogram.
