Black and White Paper

Hi, my name is Patricia W. I'm 3 years in photography. I love black and white photography. I have a dark room so I print my own photos. My question is about paper. I'm using the Ilford cool tone - it is new and I liked it very much, but I don't know if I need filters with this paper or other multigrade paper.

Hi Patricia, it's been a while since I used filters for printing but check the label if it says grade 1 2 3 4 5 or 6 - chances are you don't need filters. These numbers refer to the contrast rating of the paper. For example, 1 would be a low contrast and used with overexposed negatives 2-3 for average negs and 4, 5 and 6 for flat or low contrast negs. The filters help in achieving needed contrast or for lowering contrast. I hope this helps!!
Ernie.
