advice on backdrops...canvas, muslin? Does anyone have advice on backdrops? I like the look of paper, but hate rolling it up and dealing with tears. Is canvas or muslin better? Is it worth it to spend good money on one? Any advice would be appreciated.

Lisa I use both paper and canvas and they are both great for certain uses. Paper is plain and textureless while canvas is usually mottled texture. When thrown a little out of focus behind your subject, it looks fabulous. Denny Mfg, Mahue are sources to get them. I think that you can also get them through Calumet Photos.

Also, muslins are much heavier than canvas, so if you're having to tote your background, canvas would make more sense.

Hello, I was wondering if I could tag along so I don't need to make a new question. I'm wanting to buy or make some backdrops for when I take pictures but I don't have enough money for ones that were made for the purpose. I was thinking about buying just white or offwhile muslin and leaving it as is or dying it. How much should this cost? The local Hobby Lobby is charging $5something per yard and I'm thinking I would need around 3x5 yards? That would add up to around $70-$80! Is that really saving or are they just charging too much? I because intriqued to check this out by the article here on betterphoto.com. Thanks for your feedback!

i like backdropoutlet.com, so according to them, i'd say you're still ahead by abou 40 bucks. fabric stores are one of the best places to get backdrops imo........plus you can very affordably experiment w/many different textures patterns etc! but for paid shootings, I use backdrop outlet's canvas', while experiment some more w/the more 'wild' backdrops and eventually get into glam/promo shootings : )
