Photography Question

Tammy Comer

lighting for indoor portraits

Please help! I have a family that wants me to take pictures of them this week before the husband goes back in the army. I have taken many portraits and have been pleased with the results but most of them were outdoors. I will have to set up in my living room which has a south window and a west window. I can cover either of those up. I have a background stand, a couple of backdrops and reflector/diffuser set (I'm not sure of the exact term but it is the large cirle that will diffuse light or I can put different covers on it for other effects). I have one small lighting umbrella, an Elan 7E camera, and a flash unit attached to my camera. I have plans for actual studio lighting but I will not be able to get it this week. I would like to work with the natural light if possible. Is a nice portrait achievable without the studio lighting? I am highly stressed because one of the photos will also be placed in our church directory since the husband will be gone when everyone else is getting their picture done for the directory at a later time. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks! TAmmy

You can take excellent portraits indoors without any flash or studio lights. Use the window light as you main light and the reflector as the fill light.
