Camera for Rim to Rim Hike

Hi. I'm planning to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim, and just wanted some advice on bringing my Canon 20D. I know people have asked about what camera for photographing the GC, but I believe most of those people are photographing from the rim. I'd like to get pros & cons from anyone who has hiked/backpacked 3-7 days trip in the GC. I'm afraid I won't be happy if I bring a p&s, but there are the advantages of less weight, and I'm a little worried about the desert conditions effects on my 20D.

I don't know if I can help you much but last September, I went on a crazy trip to visit 9 national parks in 8 days. Although most of the time I just drove up to the observation points in the parks, there were places that I needed to hike a long way in the desert condition to reach the site, like the Horseshoe Bend at Glen Canyon NRA, the arches in Arches NP, the geysers in Yellowstone NP, Mounment Valley, etc. I kept my equipment to the minimum. I brought my Canon Elan 7NE, 2 lenses (28-135 and 75-300mm), one flash, 3 filters (polarizer, 81A and 3-stop GND), a light weight Manfrotto 719B tripod and a back up p&s camera. I could easily fit everything in a Lowepro AW backpack with lots of extra room for other stuff. The backpack had an all weather cover that I can pull out to cover the backpack from rain and sand. The equipment inside the backpack should be safe from the heat because they were insulated by the backpack. I tried not to bring out the camera or changing lens until I am ready to take the picture to protect my equipment from sand. When hanging my camera on my neck, I always point it downward. I had protective filter on each lens. I also had transparent plastic bags to protect my camera when there was any wind blowing up the sand (using a rubber band to tie the open end of the plastic bag to the lens hood. If I was to hike from rim to rim, I will not bring my 75-300mm lens. I used it to take photos of wild life, which is not long enough anyway. With the 20D, I don't even need the 81A filter and the flash (thus no need for the extra AA batteries). But I will bring at least 2 extra set of battery (or a solar battery charger) and a few more gig of memroy card. Yes, I will bring the (digital) p&s as the back up. Hope this helps.

If you are interested, here's the photos I took during that crazy trip:

  Andy,
Since I will be carrying everything I need from food, water, clothes, tent, etc. for 7 days...I definitely wouldn't be bringing all the stuff you brought. But I'm sure I wouldn't be happy with my photos if I just brought a p&s. Guess I'll just have to take extra precautions. Thanks for the input, and I enjoyed the photos from your trip. Looks like you had a great time!
