Buying a quality camera with great zoom

I am interested in purchasing a digital camera with one question in mind, "How to buy a digital camera that will last, on a budget, with great zoom and quality photos?"
I have been visiting various websites (ie. bpreviedw, dcresource, steves digicams, betterphoto.com) reading reviews and viewing photos to see what camera was used to take them. I purchased a canon rebel slr, 35mm in the summer time of '04 and can't wait not even for the 1 hour processing to view my pictures, so I would like to go digital.
I have a 3 year old son, my most precious model and I would like to capture great photos of him, especially close ups. Any suggestions? I would like to stay in the price range from $150 to $400 for a new digital camera. (All the photos submitted have been scanned in)

Regardless of your budget, don't jump into digital just because you can wait for a one-hour developer. The LCD image you see on the digital provides guidance only; since it's so small, you might never notice certain deficiencies that will kill a large print.

Having said that, the immediate feedback of digital is probably its strongest virtue for most amateurs.

I have the Fujifinepix kS5000. It's a great little camera. I'm getting a DSLR, but for your needs this camera or it's big brother the S7000 would be great. The S7000 might be a little spendy, but it has higher MPs than this one.

I can get very nice 8X10 prints on my 3 mp settings. I spent $370 or so on my camera, upgraded memory card, and mobile battery charger.

All pictures in my gallery are with this camera. I do a lot of portrait work on my children.

Buddy, John & Karma,
Thank you for taking the time to respond. After visiting many sites, I've been drawn to betterphoto.com, because it's provided a lot of great information, photo samples and the various cameras used. It's my first time to ask a Question, and I really appreciate your time and responses.
Buddy, thank you for doing my homework, the information is very helful.
John, don't get me wrong, I really like my Canon EOS Rebel, 35mm, but I end up processing film and sometimes find myself disappointed with my photos, because I missed the moment that I tried to capture.
Karma, I visited your gallery and you have great photos. I especially like the ones of your daughter that capture her face upclose.

  Monica -

Just remember that anticipation is the greatest part of capturing the great moment. A digital camera won't help you here! You'll be able try again, but that great smile or significant activity may not be reproducible.

  Monica,
I used an older Fuji S602Z camera (until I dropped it). The color and quality for the money is great. I've printed closeup portraits on 11x17 sheet of photo paper and it look really good. The current model is even better.

  Robert,
Thank you for the advice. I will definitely look into it. I am still looking at the reviews and looking at various models, but there is so many styles to choose from.
