i have a photo I am working on in photoshop that has required several duplicate and adjustment layers. when I flatten the image it goes from where I want it to blown out in some places and with crazy tonal values. why does this happen and what can I do? thanks.

  Tom,
I believe your problem may lie in the Adjustment Layers. Are your Adjustment Layers set for individual layers, or are some set to adjust all layers? Remember your hierarchy of Layers, and that any Adjustment Layer on top will affect any layers below it. Before flattening your image, connect each adjustment layer to the layer(s) you want affected by clicking on the actual layer first, then clicking on the square to the left of the adjustment layer - you should see a 'chainlink' appear - this means it is linked to whatever layer you are clicked on. If the adjustment layer is to affect more layers, then also click to the left of each so that you see the 'chainlink' next to each layer you want affected. Then go to Images>Merge Linked, and click on it. This will merge those linked layers into ONE layer, and the adjustment layer you used will no longer affect any other layer(s). Do this with all your adjustment layers that are not affecting the entire image. THEN, flatten, and you should be ok.
