Photography Question

Mark Groves

Help me build a Studio?

I have got to the point Where I need to build a studio but have no idea of what size to start with? How high should the ceiling be? How deep and wide does the Set area need to be? I know these questions are vague but I am at a loss of where to start. I would like three set areas. Size and cost are not a concern as this will only take up part of a larger building. I just want to avoid stupid and costly mistakes.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shine on my project.

Mark - If you've got lots space in a large building, I wouldn't worry about it. Set up your equipment, and start shooting. Don't worry about having a 'professional' shooting area - just start shooting. Instead of concentrating on having three different areas, start with one, then convert for each different session. You may find you don't have much or any need for all of them. Also, you don't define the kind of shooting you are intending to do, but maybe your three areas will cover them. If that's the case, just start with the biggest area. If your business is so good that you need all three sizes all the time, and don't have time to reset between sessions...well, you'r doing pretty good then.
Table top probably needs the lease amount of space, and head shots don't require a lot either. If you're doing a lot of full length people shots where they move around a lot, then delegate most space there. And if you're shooting large commercial products, buy the whole building!
