The older Canon FD 85 1.8 (manual focus) is very highly regarded as a portrait lens. Mine has noticeable pincushion distortion at the edges if I shoot buildings or through a doorway. The 85 USM can only be even better. I am told that the distortion in the autofocus version has been considerably tamed, if not eliminated. I use the 85 as one of my travel lenses, for portraits, flowers, and for a little reach for landscapes. If you are shooting film, don't hesitate to buy this lens.

Check out this Canon EOS fan's web site. He reviews this lens: http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/frary/ toolbox6.htm If you are shooting digital and you want this kind of coverage, look at the 50mm f1.4.
