  Hi, Sarah -

Boy, are you going to enjoy your new camera! I suggest you head over to About.com and read this article:
http://cameras.about.com/od/choosingacamera/bb/bybcamera.htm

There's a lot of good info, geared toward the novice. Think about what you want to do with your camera (i.e. action shots of kids in sports, close-up shots of insects, night exposures of city skylines, etc.) and what size prints you anticipate wanting to do with your pictures. Those two things are especially important when shopping, for you can eliminate many cameras which will not meet your needs. Also, make sure you look at optical zoom, not digital zoom; digital zoom is worthless and is an artificial cropping and resizing of an image -- the results are usually lackluster. Optical zoom is what the camera lens gives you, and that's what's key.

Hope that helps! Have fun and do your homework - it will be worth it.
