Infrared Film

Hi! I just bought a Canon A2 camera not so long ago and the manual says "due to the emission of infrared light by the camera's optical film perforation detector, infrared film cannot be used in this camera" What does this mean? Is this true? What would happen if I try infrared film in this camera - would it ruin it somehow?

the camera uses an infrared beam to count sprocket holes when advancing the film. so trying to use the film will get fogging all along the edges.
