Help! No ASA 800 Setting on My Camera!

Hi,
I have just been given an old Yashica FX-3 (yippee!) fully manual SLR (it has metering that works). I also have a roll of 800 ASA film, BUT the camera's ASA settings leap from 400 to 1000 with no 800. Can I just set it at 400 and halve the exposure? Do I just set it at 1000 and compensate; if so, how? Can I never reliably use 800 film in it, or is it wise just to stick to 400 for a while as I am an absolute beginner? Thanks.

If you are a beginner, stick with the ISO 400 until you get some experience.

Or, if you are a beginner, if you can set shutter speeds manually, just use a shutter speed that's twice as fast as what the meter reads at iso 400.

If you don't have it, the user manual for your Yashica is available at http://www.butkus.org/chinon/.

I don't know about yours, but many old cameras could set intermediate ISO between the marked values. See if there aren't a couple "click" settings between "400" and "1000" on that ISO dial.

There is only 1/3 stop difference between ISO 1000 and ISO 800. Because of the wide exposure latitude of print film (generally from -1 to +2 stops), with ISO 800 film you can simply set ISO 1000 and fire away without adjustment. Or do as Gregory L. suggested (ISO 400 and 1 stop faster shutter speed).

If you do wish to use the 800 film yes try the half exposure / extra stop method, but do realise that if it is colour you will get a distinct yellow cast from normal light globes (tungsten). Enjoy, and welcome to film based photography.
