Macro Lens - 50mm vs. 100 mm

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a macro lens as I love photographing flowers up close.
I currently shoot with the Canon Rebel 2000 but will most likely purchase the Digital Rebel very soon. I'm considering the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM and the 50mm f/2.5 Macro. I know that the 100mm is a "true" macro, while the 50mm only focuses to 1:2.

I've done a lot of research and have read many posts about macro lens. I still don't quite understand the difference between a 100mm and a 50mm. If someone could please explain the difference I would be very greatful. Also, if you have a personal preference I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!
Seth

Longer focal length macro lenses allow more working distance between the lens and the subject. This allows more flexibility in lighting with less risk of the lens casting a shadow on the subject, and a little less intrusive/threatening to live subjects like insects.

Agreed, but don't forget that one's body heat will tend to melt frost quite quickly when photographing close up. The 100mm macro is the best choice for most photographers, but if you tend to do a LOT of macro, add the 200mm to the list. The 50 is an ok choice for table top macro.
