In portrait photography, is there a general rule about the distance between the backdrop and the subject?

Paula- If you are using strobes in the studio, you want the person far enough away to prevent your strobe lights from creating a shadow of the person on the background and thus showing up in the frame. The way you light them will also decide where their shadow falls. I also like the background to be out of focus to support the person. In answer to your questions, about 8-10 feet.
