Photographing Older People


How do you formally pose and light older men and women? All of the instructional manuals I've seen are geared toward posing young people, but senior citizens can't bend that way, and my usual main and fill-lighting setup shows off too many shadows in their older faces. I don't want just "stand over there" poses; I want something formal, but artistic. Any ideas?

GOOD DAY JERRY,
WHEN POSING SENIORS, YOU DO NEED MORE DIRECT LIGHT TO FILL THE CREASES IN THE FACE, ALSO THERE CAN BE ISSUES OF THIER CHIN ,WIEGHT, AND GLASSES.
FOR WIEGHT (ESPECIALY ON WOMEN) PUT YOUR STOOL UP AS HIGH AS IT WILL GO , HAVE THEM SIT UP STRAIGHT, ON THE EDGE BUT AT A ANGLE, AND PUT THEIR LEGS AS FAR OUT IN FRONT OF THEM AS POSSIBLE, POSE ARMS AND HAVE THEM LEAN TOWARD YOU. YOU SHOULD BE AS CLOSE TO THE CAMERA AS POSSIBLE, THIER NOSE SHOULD BE POINTING AT THE CAMERA- THIS WILL GIVE YOU FULL EYES AND SITTING THIS WAY WILL THIN THEM OUT A BIT AND WHEN LEANING TOWARD YOU, THE CHIN WILL COME UP A BIT.YOU WILL NEED TO POSE THE ARMS AS TO GIVE YOU SUBJECT WINDOWS THIS WILL MAKE THEM LOOK SLIMER AS WELL.
WHEN IT COMES TO GLASSES BRING YOUR MAIN LIGHT UP HIGHER AND POINT DOWN- THIS BECOMES TRICKY - SOME ARE SO LARGE THAT YOU STILL GET GLARE- TRY THESE: PUSH GLASSES ALL THE WAY BACK ON THIER NOSE - RAISE MAIN LIGHT - AND THEN IF YOU STILL HAVE GLARE YOU MAY NEED TO BRING THIER STOOL DOWN A LITTLE AT A TIME ,SACRIFICEING THINNING FOR NO GLARE.

PS ALWAYS EXPLAIN THAT IF A POSE ID UNCOMFOTABLE IT IS A GOOD POSE(WHY? BECAUSE WHEN WE ARE COMORTABLE WE TEND TO RELAX AND : SLOUCH, TUMMY OUT,TUCK CHIN ECT. I ALWAYS POINT OUT TO MY STUDENTS TO LOOK AT THEM SELVES AT THIS VERY SECOND.LOL, ARE YOU DOING IT? IT'S A GOOD TOOL-ALSO, SIT YOUR SELF IN FRONT OF A MIRROR AND PRACTISE THIS STUFF) YOU ALWAYS KNEW IF A SUBJECT HAD SAT FOR ME BEFORE- THEY HAD SEEN THE DIFFERENCE AND WOULD COME IN AND AUTOMATCILY POSE FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER IN THESE MANNERS.
