Photography Question

Which lens is better for the Canon 20D?

I 'am purchasing the Canon 20D very soon, and was wondering if anyone out there could help me with my lens choice.
I have narrowed it down to 2 lens choices: The Tamron SP AF28-75mm f2.8 XR Di, or the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Most important to me is this be a good Portrait lens. That's primarily what I will want it for.
Does anyone know anything about these two lenses, that makes one a better choice than the other to shoot portraits in a somewhat studio type setting? Any suggestions or help would be most welcome. Thanks!

IMHO, the EF-S 17-85 would be a better all-around use lens, with much wider wide-angle, longer telephoto and Image Stabilization.

However, for protrait use, the larger f/2.8 aperture available on the Tamron zoom would make it better for getting shallow depth of field to separate your subject from the background.

For strictly studio portrait use, the Canon EF 50 f/1.4 USM (and/or EF 85 f/1.8 USM) would be even better.

Thank you Jon for your response, just the info I'm looking for! I suspected the Tamron would be better for portraits because of the larger f2.8 aperture. But wasn't sure, and needed confirmation from someone that knew more than myself about the lenses.
What do you think about the cheaper Canon 50 1.8 lens that sells for about 75.00? Would this be at all comparable to the Canon 50 1.4? Thanks for your input thus far!

Yes, the EF 50 f/1.8 is comparable in optical performance. It is a terrific bargain (as are similar 50 f/1.8 lenses by Nikon, Minolta, Pentax). It just isn't made quite as well - cheap feel plastic, no USM autofocus, poor manual focus handling, no focus distance scale.

Thank you Jon, this is good information to know, and it will help me in my research & decision in lens choice.
