Will internal flash trigger 420EX

Recently, while shopping for cameras and lighting equipment, a Nikon sales rep. said that the D-70 internal flash could be used to trigger their external flashes. Basically, the external flashes would be slave like in behavior.

While I found this intriquing, I was wondering in Canon could do the same thing. Could I use the Elan 7e's internal flash to trigger the 420 EX, which would be used off the camera to create directional lighting?

I have recently purchased the 420 EX, but it has yet to arrive, hence no books.

Also, is a syn cord needed, if I choose to later purchase a Vivitar 283? And, if so, which one?

Thanking you in advance.

With the current Canon EOS cameras, the 420EX/550EX/580EX can be used as wireless E-TTL-metered slaves, but the wireless control must come from a base speedlight rather than the camera. So in addition to the 420EX acting as a slaved side light, you'd need either the ST-E2 controller, 550EX, 580EX, MR-14EX, or MR-24EX acting as the master control.

Wired control of the 420EX off-camera with E-TTL metering is enabled by the Off-Camera Shoe Cord 2 or Canon's other longer E-TTL/TTL cable connectors. However, the built-in flash cannot be used with these connected to the hotshoe.

You could use the 420EX off-camera with an optical slave so that it is trigged by the camera's built-in flash. The slaved 420EX would not be TTL-controlled, so it would (probably) fire at full output when used this way.

I don't know the Nikon system well enough to comment on it. Wireless control of compatible speedlights might be included in some of the camera bodies, a la some of Minolta's current model Maxxum/Dynax cameras.
