Canon or Nikon

Can't decide between the Canon EOS Elan IIE or the Nikon N80. The specs and price are pretty close. Who has the better quality lenses? Is the N80 body as durable as the Elan IIE? Are there any independent sites that critique these?
Thx!

I recently purchased a Nikon F80 (In Canada Nikon N series is called the F series ???) Anyway, it is an amazing camera. My cousin just purchased comparable Canon equipment (Elan 7E). I don't think you can compare the quality. The Nikon is based on an aluminum alloy chassis whereas the Canon is all plastic. The only thing I can say about the Canon is the camera is really quiet (the noise of the N80 can prove to be a problem). Myself, though, I would rather have the focusing speed and accuracy of the Nikon.

The Elan 7 is NOT "all plastic". The Elan 7 (and the Elan II before it) have a stainless steel lens mount. The top and front have an aluminum cladding. It has very rugged construction, weighing 575g compared to the F80's 515g. There is no sacrifice in quality between these two cameras.

The Elan 7 (when used with Canon USM lenses rather than 3rd party) does not have slower autofocus than the F80. The Elan 7 also has faster film advance (4 fps) than the F80 (2.5 fps).

There are legitimate reasons for someone to choose the F80 over the Elan 7. Some reasons might be:

Nikon's backward compatibility with its manual focus lenses, or preferring the F80's backlit LCD panel, on demand viewfinder gridlines, or 2% spot metering v. Elan 7's 9.5% partial metering.

But please, let's be accurate in our comparisons.

I am not biased to either company and I have used both camera's(F80 & Elan 7E). I would have to say that the Elan 7E is of stronger build quality particularly around the inbuilt flash.
The Elan 7E has a quicker autofocus and I found the F80's autofocus could sometimes be fooled in low light conditions.
The main advantages that the Elan 7E has over the F80 are: eye control focus, high speed flash sync with E-TTL 380, 420, 550EX, higher speed film advance, internal contacts for shutter release and AE lock via BP-300 vertical grip, mirror lock up.
The main advantages the F80 has are: spot metering rather than partial metering, on demand grid lines.
These are both good cameras Shannon, just base the choice on your personal needs.

I want to change my Nikon F70.
I tried (for a few minutes) a Nikon F80 and a Canon EOS 30(Elan 7E).

Canon has an INCREDIBLE autofocus speed, is very quiet, faster and its specifications say that has a metal (aluminum) body; Nikon is lighter
(I didn't find anywhere specifications about its body material, could anyone help me about it with a web link) and has better AF and exposure sensitivity.

Canon has already stabilized lenses that would increase operations in handheld-mode in low lights conditions (could anyone confirm it?), but Nikon seems to follow this Canon strategy.

Nikon has an excellent multizoned (Matrix) exposure system (I don't know about Canon) and a better selective spot measuring.

I don't know about real efficiency of Canon eye-control AF sensor selection.

I think these are both good cameras, but I would like to know opinions of real users of them.

BYE

I have only owned a couple of lower-end Canons and have owned Nikon all my life so naturally I'm a Nikon man. I do know I'd compare my f100s auto focus to any of Canon's SLRs and lenses and would most likely come up pretty even. The f100 is very quiet, has all the bells and whistles and if I drop it, I'd pick it back up and continue shooting. Not to dis Canon's eye control focus but there's been numerous reports of failure in this area. If I were you, I'd consider dropping both the Canon ell and the Nikon f80 and step up to the Nikon f100; resale value alone makes it worth the extra cash.

Nice to see another Canon vs. Nikon forum. I was also in same dilemma a month back, deciding between F80 and Elan 7e. In my opinion both are good cameras. Used both of 'em and decided to go with a EOS 7e + 28-135 IS USM combination. No matter which body you buy, go for a descent lens to start with (The kit lenses are too bad). Try yourself and then decide. All the best...

IMO, exposure control is the most important factor in photography. The Nikon F80 does have a better exposure control. ie 3D matrix and most importantly 1% spot metering over Canon Elan 7 10% partial.

As for lens, no matter how expensive a lens is, 35mm format is still 35mm format. If you really want true resolution, go for a larger format.

I still prefer a Nikon F80 because I know that one day I will need a FM2 for traveling to really cold countries. Then , hopefully, I will not need to invest in a totally new lens.

I found my self comparing the Canon and Nikons when I purchased the ElanllE. Why? Well my feelings were that the quality of each brand is outstanding. The features are in fact close enough that only a very critical professional would see a need for or want a particular feature. I found that with the Canon I could afford higher end lenses and accessories. They were priced "apples for apples and oranges for oranges" considerably less. I felt I was leaving more money to spend on what we want the camera for... taking photographs.
