How do I shoot this scene?

I just moved up to the Canon EOS 20D from a point & shoot :-). I will be shooting a specific scene and need some help in what settings to choose I won't have many practice shots. I will be photographing Skiers and snowboarders possible doing jumps and most likely going pretty fast. Midday sunny and taking shots from about 10 - 40 feet away. I have two lenses 28-135 and the 100-300 canon lenses and filters. Any help on shutter, Aperture, Auto settings, suggestions. Thanks

You probably want to go with fast stop action-wide open aperature and fast shutter speed. If it is a bright, clear and sunny day with no dark shadows that your subject is in, you should be able to shoot at around f/4 @ 1/2000 at ISO 100. Do a quick test when you get to your location. With your camera set on manual, lens set at f/4, use the spot meter pattern and take a reading of the brightest patch of snow in the scene. Then go to shutter speed and set it 1 2/3 stops slower than the meter reading. So if the camera says 1/4000 at f/4, set your shutter speed at 1/1250. Shoot another at this setting and then check your histogram to make sure that the highlight side barely touches the right side, thus keeping you highlight detail. This technique could really block up shadows if there are many in the scene.
