Getting a reading from Brother Blue Sky

Hi Bryan:
We've communicated before via E-mail. I have your "Understanding Exposure" book, and I'm so glad you published it.
Bryan, I have a Canon Elan-7, which as you know is a film camera. You have an example on pg. 124, where you took a reading from the sky above the schoolhouse. Now with the Elan-7, if I try to get a reading from the sky it just won't happen, because there's just not enough texture for the in camera meter to pick up. In other words, it needs something to focus on. The deep blue sky is just one continuous color. If there was a fluffy cloud near by, I could focus on that. Now this is happening with autofocus activated.
In the viewfinder there are 7 focusing points. And when focus is achieved, you hear a beep, and alittle red square lights up to show focus was achieved.
Can I focus on the schoolhouse, and then possibly overexpose a stop or two?
Sorry I'm getting so winded on this. Can you help? Your time and patience is much appreciated.
Respectfully, Charley Andrisano

You don't need to achieve focus lock before getting the exposure reading. Or you can put your lens in manual focus mode, get the exposure reading, and put the lens back in auto focus mode.
