Digital Aperture Settings (f2.8 -8)

HI

I am trying to work out the apperture settings on my Fuji S5500. I am used to using a 35mm film SLR and am having trouble converting to the change in apperture settings with regards to Depth of field.

As I understand it my digital has a focal length of just 5.7-57mm giving me a 6.6 multiplier with reagrds to a 35mm. This means I wont be able to blur backgrounds (unless I use macro mode).

What I want to know is if F2.6 on the fuji is equivalant to F18 on a 35mm why would I ever need to go above the F2.6 for just taking normal shots? If I was to take a picture of landscape on the 35mm I would use a minimum of F16, but usually F22. F22 equates to F3.3 on the digital! So why would I ever want to go above f3.3 on my digital beacuse the depth of field is going to be the same as on the 35mm film?

if I was to answer my question myself I would say it has to do with the fact that the Aperture settings are still the same between digital and 35mm film with regards to the amount of light they let in. So I could use F8 on my digital when its a very sunny day and I cant get a fast enough shutter speed etc.

This brings me onto my final question. If I do use F8 on my digital (f52.8 on 35mm film!!!) would this give me a very sharp picture if taking landscape? Would this picture look better than the same picture taken on a 35mm film with F22?

Nathan
