Lenses for Portraits Hi, I'm very new to using a camera that is not just point and shoot. I bought a Canon Rebel and two lenses. the 70-300mm f4-5.6 macro super and also the shorter 24-70 f3.5-5.6 UC. Which one is faster? Better for Portraits? Recomendation for a better lense. I seem to get better people photos with the 70-300mm but of course the flash does not reach that far. Help. I don't think I can set the aperature for anything less than 4.0. I get more blur with the longer lense but don't like up close face shots with the wider angle lense. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Zoomed to between 60mm and 70mm (about the minimum you'd want to use for portraits) the maximum aperture of the 24-70 is f/5.6. From 70mm to about 100mm (a better protrait range) the 70-300 has a wider aperture of f/4. I'd use the 24-70 for group shots, where you'd want wider angle and smaller aperture for more depth of field, and the 70-300 for single portraits - especially head & shoulder closeup. To reduce blur you have to use a tripod/monopod, or practice good technique and bracing your self. Operate the zoom cradled in your left hand with elbow in against your body. Practice gentle half-press of the shutter to AF then press the rest of the way without jerking the camera. A rule of thumb for hand-held shutter speeds is 1/focal length, or set to the maximum x-sync speed (1/90) when using flash. >>"... but of course the flash does not reach that far."<<

thank you. That helps. I didn't realize the flash would reach that far. I'm getting a speed light soon.
