Speedlite bracket for 20D- should I use? I have the Canon 20D and the 580EX speedlite...does it make THAT much of a difference having the speedlite off the the side with the bracket as opposed to attaching to the hot shoe?

The purpose of moving the flash off the camera is to control the shadow and angle of light hitting the subject. Mounting the flash on the camera's hot shoe provides frontal light, which is not too pleasing, especially in portrait. Hope this helps.

Hi Lisa, Andy is quite right about the better look of flash farther away from the lens. And if you want to turn the camera sideways for a more pleasing portrait format, the light coming from that angle can really be very ugly. There is also another reason. The closer the flash is to the lens the greater the chance of the dreaded "red-eye" which is the flash output reflecting off of the blood-rich retina in the subject's eyes. that is why pros go to such length to get flash brackets that set the flash away from the camera. Some allow the camera to rotate under them and maintain the same relative flash position. These are popular with event and wedding shooters. Flash-on-camera is brutal and ugly as a general rule.
