Saving Blotched Job

I recently went to California on an assignment and shot some really good stuff. I returned home and e-mailed some of the choice shots back to the client, who was very pleased with the effort. Unfortunately my computer blue-screened soon after and I lost everything. I usually save all my work on an external hard drive right from the start but was in the process of editing the work before saving it this time. Big mistake. All I have left are the e-mailed photos, which were sent at quarter-page size. Is there any way I can salvage them without getting a lot of pixtel reproduction? I know I won't be able to get decent 11 by 14 reproductions but decent 5 by 7 shots would be wonderful.

P.S. -- It was a very expensive lesson but since then I never delete things off my cards until I have saved the shots on either disc or external hard drive. Proves once again that Murphy's Law is alive and well; things like this never happen when you are shooting robins in your own back yard. Go on assignment to California on assignment though and you are ripe for problems.

This might not be as bad as you think - of course I am assuming this is Windows due to the term "blue screen" - if it is a MAC I am not sure the same applies. If your computer blue screened, it generally means an operating system failure rather than a hardware (hard drive) failure. I had something similar happen to me with an on-line grad course recently. If you purchase a second drive and install an operating system on it, you can typically access data files on the other (failed) drive. It's worth a try if nothing else - you can pick up additional hard drives relatively cheaply for a test...

If you have the emailed pix, a quick solution would be to purchase Genuine Fractiles and upsize them.... You should even be able to get decent 11 X 14 out of those shots...
