Canon Flash Attachments

I have a Canon Elan IIe and am purchasing a Canon flash unit. The choices are the 550ex or the new 420ex. Money is not an issue. The 550 is top of the line for shoe mounts, but I wonder if the 420ex has better electronics since it is the latest on the market (Oct 2000).

  Hi Daniel

I find 550ex and 420ex the top-end flashes and am sure they cost a packet.

I would suggest that you check whether Canon Elan IIe is a type A camera or a type B camera.

In a type B camera the flash sync is restricted, while in type A camera you can opt for a high-sync flash output.

If you are paying for the flash it should work for you and that depends to some extent on whether what you have is a type A camera or Type B camera.

Sorry for the looooong reply.

FYI, the Elan II/IIe is capable of utilizing the high-speed flash sync and E-TTL metering of the EX model speedlights.

I resolved the issue by selling my Elan IIe on ebay and buying an Elan 7e and the 420ex. I am very happy with my purchase. The eye controlled focus on the 7e is noticeably faster and I know the camera and flash will work well together. Making the upgrade was relatively painless as the IIe held its resale value well and the 7e handles very much like the IIe.
